[AMD][Family 15h] CoreFreq Capabilities

Hi, I was wondering what CoreFreq is capable of these days? Is it compatible with Bristol Ridge & Carrizo-L, A12-9720P & A8-7410? I intend on fixing some issues I have with it. May you please add me on Discord @ heyitschris1987 ... I'll add you to our discussion on these APU CPU matters, we have people working on it as we speak, but need more brilliant minds like yours brother!

CoreFreq aimes to provide support for x86_64 processor architectures since two decades.
Except Opteron, yours have a minimalistic implementation that just need to add codes.
Make sure first you are working on your own branch. If not done yet, from latest master, create a branch with the AMD architecture family as a chosen name. For instance "AMD_F15h"
Then let me know where I can review your branch.

Well, I am new to github & do not know what you mean by create a branch & how to show you where to review my branch? What do I do? I desire to learn how Carrizo-L & Bristol Ridge, derive their power limit, if it is in effect, at all? AMD uProf say 27W on A12-9720P. How do I raise the power limit through registers, sir? Thanks

If you are using CoreFreq from Linux running on your Carrizo-L & Bristol Ridge then I will need some outputs from the CLI to evaluate what is queried so far from Processor(s)

Please run and post the output of this command:

corefreq-cli -s -k -n -m -C 1

In other case, if you are using CoreFreq from its ISO on USB then just post photos of the main screen, another one of the view Sensors, and others showing these windows: Processor; Topology; Features; Power; Kernel

I'm a newb to linux and such but i do use ubuntu, can I line up CoreFreq on ubuntu?

Once compiled, the 3 CoreFreq binaries will be found in the build sub-directory. So the final steps are:

## as root
insmod build/corefreqk.ko

I'm more interested in Bristol Ridge which is my A12-9720P first.

This is what I have come up with, I searched the documents but we don't know how these APU's work, is it TDP holding it back or what?

AMD A8-7410: The 30h-3Fh model range belongs to the Puma+ architecture within AMD’s Family 16h1. This includes processors like the AMD A8-7410, which are designed for improved power efficiency and performance in mainstream laptops.

AMD A12-9720P: This processor belongs to the Excavator architecture within the Family 15h, specifically in the 70h-7Fh model range2. It’s aimed at mainstream laptops and offers better performance and efficiency compared to earlier models.

The current implementation for AMD family 15h, whatever the model is, is to provide:

• the P-States frequency, voltage
• the temperature and thermal throttling status

CoreFreq is made to read Registers from the BKDG datasheet. I can add code to read other registers either if have an access to the hardware or if you can build and run all changes.

How do you build on Ubuntu:

## Install kernel development 
sudo apt install dkms git gcc make
## Download (clone) source code
git clone https://github.com/cyring/CoreFreq.git
## Go to the project 
cd CoreFreq
## Build CoreFreq
make
## Load the driver
sudo insmod build/corefreqk.ko
## Run the daemon
sudo build/corefreqd -d
## Open new terminal and run the CLI
cd CoreFreq
./build/corefreq-cli

If you successfully manage to do the above instructions, please show me a screenshot of the CLI startup screen.

EDIT: You press F1 to F4 keys for help and menus. Arrow keys to navigate; Enter to select; ESC to cancel or close any window

Next, press ctrl+c to exit the CLI and start it again with options to export what have to be checked

Everything is fine in your first screenshot where the driver corefreqk.ko and the daemon corefreqd are correctly started. You let them running.

Now you open a new terminal, go to the project directory to start the Client

## Run a new xterm
cd CoreFreq
./build/corefreq-cli

To sum up, CoreFreq is made in 3 parts which each depends on the previous one.

<Client> needs <Daemon> needs <Driver>

Here's some data we collected, we can force to A12-9720P to P0 3.6Ghz but it throttles eventually. What shall we do, instead to lock it in? I have it modded, the VRM, the cooling & all, it never exceeds 80C.

When forcing P0 on A8-7410, it forces NB to 399mhz, how to fix?

The code exists, it has worked with other family 15h processors; but here no thermal values reported !

You now need to update CoreFreq to test this fix.

Please follow these instructions.

## Stop the Client `corefreq-cli` with [ctrl]+[c]

## Stop the Daemon `corefreqd` , also with [ctrl]+[c]

## Unload the Driver
sudo rmmod corefreqk.ko

## Go to the working directory
cd /home/chrisninski/CoreFreq

## Clean-up binaries
make clean

## Get the latest source code
git pull

## Optionally, check you have retrieved the latest commits
git log
## You should read these comments:
## [AMD] Add missing DCU and XPROC_LEAK bitmasks on legacy processors
## [AMD][Excavator] Fix setting the scope of temperature to Package
## Press `q` to quit the log

## Everything is fine, CoreFreq is updated; you can build it again
make

## And start it again
sudo insmod ./build/corefreqk.ko
sudo ./build/corefreqd

## Open a new terminal, change to working directory and start the CLI
cd /home/chrisninski/CoreFreq
./build/corefreq-cli

Now please take some screenshots of the User Interface

1. The main screen
   I would like to see the temperatures in columns Min TMP Max

2. Press the w key and take a screenshot of the window "Power, Current & Thermal"
   I would like to see if TjMax is no more a zero value ?

3. Press the y key , resize the Terminal to fit the UI width (about 196 columns!) and take a screenshot

4. I would like also you post ./build/corefreq-cli -s

Can you update and try latest CoreFreq since commit 7a1aeb4 with one of your AMD Family 15h processors: the A12-9720P is fine.

Take of a screenshot of the main corefreq-cli UI screen where I would to check if the bottom row is now showing the current voltage among all CPUs

Remark: I'm not finding what is the expected baseclock of this processor.

CoreFreq is computing a BCLK of about 84 MHz but the advertised frequencies will compute a BCLK of 100 MHz despite the UI confirms an INVariant TSC

If one need to run with a static BCLK of 100 MHz then you have to start the driver with a disabled AutoClock

insmod ./build/corefreqk.ko AutoClock=0

Using this option, the driver won't recompute the baseclock at each interval and remain at the value specified by the datasheet. See function BaseClock_AuthenticAMD()

Long time a go, CoreFreq had measured a baseclock of 98.34 MHz on a Opteron 6386 SE which also belongs to the family 15h of AMD processors. BCLK estimation was more accurate.

Do you think it's thermal throttling by vrm overheating? I'm having thermal vrm issues on 2500u lenovo 330s-15arr as well. It appears lenovo didn't cool the vrm for years & years & performance suffers as a result. Is there anything we can do?

This is the 320-15abr lenovo ideapad.

I do not know but I would re-flash the board with its original BIOS firmware and run CoreFreq again to check if the stressed CPU behavior is changing thermal throttling or not ?

It throttles same way with stock bios I'm sure it's the tdp because we ran Smu commands for tdp and it improved performance tremendously
