Github action takes a long time to complete

I recently made some changes to use Github Packages and creates workflows for this but I notices that my build tasks started taking a lonnggg time to complete. going from 4-5 minutes to 50 minutes plus, and just now a build time of over 2 hours!
It seems to take a really long time to download dependencies but it fluctates a lot.

In the workflow it checks out the code then tries to see if a repo cache is available and if not it will just build normally. it then runs mvn clean compile and starts compiling the code. This job took 2 hours on the last run. (job)

Does someone know if this is a github runner issue or if its with the repo hosting the dependencies? Thanks in advance!

You workflow isn't using restore-keys for actions/cache.

Given how gigantic your cache is, not using restore-keys is almost certainly a big problem.

Hi, the only reason i've set up the cache is because otherwise it takes too long to build the project.

I will add the restore key later but I dont think tht the restore key tag is the cause of the problem.

Download the raw logs, relativize the timestamps with a spreadsheet and then figure out which pieces are misbehaving (i.e. taking much longer than in the fast run).

It's possible something was down/slow/retrying.

I already know whats mis behaving, its the downloading of the dependencies. And I just checked the log and at 2023-05-07T18:52:36.4862089Z it started downloading a 39MB file and it finished at 2023-05-07T19:12:59.4998024Z

That means it took a full 20 minutes to download 1 jar file.

The original author has improved their workflow to use restore-keys. If you aren't properly caching, you should.

Note that "actions" here is not "please support arbitrary actions", it's the underlying technology. Provide a link to a workflow / actions run and someone might look at it and give advice.

just fyi using restore-keys was not the solution to my problem. The problem was some bandwidth limitation that made downloading files REALLY slow.

Nope no solution, it solved itself over time. I kinda think it was a slow connection on GitHub’s side, but good luck proving that
